Sir - I was appalled to read (The Irish Times, September 26th) of the decision of the ASTI to advise its members to boycott the Young Scientists Exhibition. I feel it is putting the interests of unions in general ahead of that of pupils. I would pity any student who had undertaken a project for the next Young Scientists Exhibition and who now finds that his teacher is advised by the ASTI to boycott it.
The Young Scientists Exhibition has been a tremendous encouragement to students to undertake scientific projects. This decision by ASTI is bad for their students' interests and should be reversed. - Yours, etc., Liam Bannan,
