Madam, - Your Editorial of January, "Young Scientists", deserves comment. It praises students, "top scientists", Aer Lingus, Esat and Esat BT. Even the avuncular Minister for Education and Science, Mr Dempsey, earns a mention.

In vain I looked for some sop to the teachers who spent long hours encouraging, inspiring, guiding, cajoling, minding, transporting and even feeding these putative scientists. All for no charge.

Is this a new Stalinist policy of excluding the disaffected on the part of The Irish Times? - Yours, etc.,
