Sir, - In her column (Opinion, September 7th) Medb Ruane says: "Bill Clinton is actually an American, not a Yank. The term Yank was specially reserved for Irish-Americans". According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary a Yank or Yankee was an inhabitant of New England or one of the northern states. Whether they were of Irish descent or not is irrelevant.
