Working roles for women

Madam, - Niamh Brennan (Opinion, August 7th) had some fairly good points to make on women's roles. One of my good friends opted to stay at home and raise her children, even though her income was then greater than her husband's. The result: she has achieved the near-impossible - two really charming, intelligent and thoughtful teenagers, who help her out now that she has resumed work outside the home.

But as for positive discrimination, Ms Brennan needs to get a grip. She may not like it philosophically, but she has missed the point: it works.

In an ideal world, everything would be gained by merit. Family connections and the "old boy" network would be irrelevant. If Ms Brennan thinks these don't still do more than the rather modest proposed "quotas", she is living in a different reality tunnel to mine. - Yours, etc.,
