Sir, - After laboriously wading through Mr Paul O'Brien's letter (June 27th) in which he makes Ms Harney's implementation of the Social Welfare regulations sound like a plot out of an Orwellian novel, I've come to the conclusion there is only one sensible solution to the "Workfare" dilemma.
Let those in receipt of Social Welfare decide (without penalty) if employment or furthering their education should be the criterion to receiving benefits.
In the interest of fairness, the PAYE worker should also be able to choose whether or not his or her tax money should go to social welfare recipients who refuse work or enrol in educational programmes.
I'm sure Mr O'Brien would agree that if this is truly a Republic, everyone's voice must be heard on matters which have such an enormous impact on their lives. - Yours, etc., Edward D. Rafferty,
