Sir, - As a member of the Green Movement it gives me no pleasure to express my opposition to the proposed wind turbines at Kilfarrasy, Co Waterford (From The South-East, March 25th).While the concept of wind energy has now been accepted, the selection of sites is another matter. The siting of these windmills in scenic and recreational areas is not the way forward and many proposals have been fought, with some success, by local communities. As mentioned in Dick Grogan's report, it is still not too late for a national survey to select suitable sites based on environmental as well as economic considerations. Communities should then be asked for their approval. The planning process should be the last resort as its confrontational nature can create grave divisions in the community.I find it very sad that wind energy is now getting a very bad name and is mentioned in the same breath as MMDS and mobile phone masts. Wind turbines, sensitively sited, are an essential component of our national energy strategy if we are to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. - Yours, etc., Roger Garland,Butterfield Drive,Dublin 14.
