Sir, - Y, writing about Tarka the Otter (In Time's Eye, August 12th), asks: When did you last see an otter?
Readers might like to know that the otter is still common, and spotted regularly, around Clew Bay.
Westport House lake is home to some that I see, and along the shoreline of the inner bay the islands and the coastal region around Old Head are home to many more.
Let us hope that conserving their habitats and ensuring uncontaminated water will safeguard the otter her, and prevent the "disastrous fall" in numbers experienced in Britain. -Yours, etc.,
