Where are the women?

Madam, - Bravo for Lucy Keaveney (July 9th). At last someone has else has noted the serious discrepancy in the number of photographs of women compared with those of men in The Irish Times. Let me add my voice by pointing out that many other newspapers also fall short in this regard.

It was not always so. I can remember when women were in plentiful supply in all newspapers - and not hidden away in the back pages among reports of camogie matches or ICA meetings, either. Oh, no! Some admirable publications featured a woman or two right from the word go. On page three of one publication you could count on at least one delightful creature displaying her charms; and some popular papers presented a veritable chorus line of lovelies throughout, happily without a male, or much else, to be seen.

Alas, all has changed. Now the pages are full of nothing but old fogies - politicians, judges, businessmen and the like.

I just hope someone like yourself takes note of this blatant example of sexism and restores some semblance of balance. More girls to gladden your pages, I say. - Yours, etc.,
