What a waste

Madam, – I refer to the article “Waste charges are higher here than competing states” (Business Today, August 20th)

Madam, – I refer to the article “Waste charges are higher here than competing states” (Business Today, August 20th). Sadly, the principle point seems to have been missed in that currently we are wasting millions by sending thousands of tonnes of recyclable materials to landfill rather than reusing them via composting and recycling.

A business paying between €110 and €132 per ton to dispose of waste could enjoy immediate savings of 50 per cent by composting the organic fraction of this waste and most builders’ waste can be profitably reused as aggregate and fuel.

Composting is a simple process that not only improves our ability to compete internationally but also creates local employment opportunities while at the same time reducing the habitat destruction associated with peat extraction. – Yours, etc,
