Madam, - Neil Maclean's letter about weedkilling by local councils brought to mind what I saw while in New Zealand some time ago.
On leaving my sister's home we waited while a council truck passed with a tank attached to the top, and a man sitting on the side directed a spray at the weeds along the sidewalk.
When we returned some hours later the weeds were shrivelled up, and within a few days had disappeared. I was so taken with the effect that I rang the council to ask what they had in the spray. Boiling water. Clean and harmless.
On my return I suggested this method to both Kilkenny and Waterford councils - to no avail. The contamination of the weedkiller remains more acceptable. - Yours, etc,
