Sir, - The quality of the water in Seapoint and the Forty Foot is obviously most unpleasant, to judge by the letter from Joe Redmond
(July 11th), and deserving of complaint. However, this topic was raised with regard to the success or otherwise of the pumping station in Salthill. With all respect to Mr Redmond, I suggest that the detritus he encounters when swimming is not from the lavatories of the residents of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, but rather from rubbish discarded by visitors to the area, many of them local.
The fact that many Irish people still feel free to leave souveniers of their picnics and their private lives behind them after a day or a night by the sea is more to do with their lack of consideration than the responsibility of a local authority. The fact still remains that there has been a marked improvement in water quality in Dun Laoghaire since the treatment plant went into operation in 1991/ 92. - Yours, etc., BARBARA CULLETON, Blackrock, Co
