Sir, - The greater portion of the blame for the murder of Veronica Guerin lies fairly at the door of inept politicians. They have starved the judicial system of funds, procrastinated on building extra prison space and failed to introduce or activate legislation relevant to the drugs problem. They know the experience of other countries where drugs have taken, hold and yet bury their heads in the sand. They take it upon themselves to decide that cost is a deterrent in providing prison spaces.
The population of this country has no problem in locking up thugs at any cost and throwing away the key! Politicians do not have foresight. They could not see that the mockery of officialdom by the late unlamented "General" would encourage others to up the ante. A young woman had to pay with her life because politicians failed to do what they are elected to do protect us fro criminality. J'accuse! - Yours etc.,
