Sir, A time for reassessment. A time to reconsider the values of a society that cannot prevent the murder of a young woman for daring to expose the ugly face of organised crime.
A society where wealth buys immunity from the law, where crime pays very well indeed and where the right to life is something of a tradable commodity. Let us not be naive let us recognise that there are no absolute freedoms, that we must make choices by curtailing some freedoms and enhancing others and in the process determine the type of society that we really want.
Veronica Guerin, through her work and, tragically by her death has forced us to confront issues of real import, let us not fail her a second time with fudging and procrastination.
It is small comfort to her bereaved family but Veronica will be remembered when the cowards responsible for her death have long since turned to dust.
Yours, etc., Beaumont, Dublin 9.
