Sir, May I echo the abhorrence expressed by everyone in their right minds on the murder of Veronica Guerin. Normally I don't support mass hysteria, but on this occasion I think it is completely appropriate especially if it forces the lily livered Labour Party off its wishy washy perch. It's entirely typical that it would take a tragedy to shake them out of their wimpy complacency. Who was it who said the road to hell was paved with good intentions?
The mistake that too many people make is to believe in absolute positions the proverbial tough measures are called for now, but the skill of good government will be to anticipate when the gardai or courts are losing the run of themselves or misusing their powers. Then the pendulum will have to be swung back the other way again. But this time let's hope that there will be enough vision in Government to foresee the tragedy before it occurs. Yours,. etc., Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
