Sir, - As the latest OECD report on the educational standards of 15-year-olds proves, yet again, that the Irish education system and Irish teachers are the best in the OECD area, will our Government now, pay our teachers what they have asked for?

Further, will those journalists and other detractors in the media at large cease their rigorous sniping at the finest teachers in the developed world? Due note should be taken of the fact that the achievements of our teachers and their students are based on one of the lowest levels of Government investment in the OECD area.

If we do not address these issues now, we will be reading a very different report in a few years. Then, we will have no choice but to lay the blame where it will belong: with this Government. - Yours, etc.,
