Sir, - I read with dismay that St Vincent's Nurses' Home is to be blown up. It is typical of our selective vision of what constitutes our heritage that we do not value anything that is less than 75 years old. If this was to be put forward in 100 years' time there would be uproar from An Taisce (in the unlikely event of it surviving that long).
The building, while not the best example of contemporary design, has nonetheless some features of interest and proportions which are loosely based on the Golden Section. Most importantly, however, it represents 1960s architecture which, whether we like it or not, is part of our developing heritage.
Isn't it ironic that we have similar scant regard for the value of the building's residents - nurses. - Yours, etc.,
