Madam, - I enjoyed Louise Holden's interview with Susie Hall, the newly-elected President of the ASTI, in your edition of September 14th.
I was struck by Mrs Hall's statement that "wealth does not suit us". It's a terrible indictment of the educational policies of successive governments during a period of unprecedented prosperity, culminating in the era of the Celtic Tiger, that class sizes have jumped from 15:1 in the 1970s to double that ratio in present-day Ireland.
As the son of a former primary school teacher, I have always had a high regard for teachers. Let's hope the new Minister for Education is of like mind. - Yours, etc.,
