Madam, - The Irish Offshore Operators' Association wholeheartedly supports Prof John Simmie (The Irish Times, August 23rd), in his argument that gas from the Corrib Field should be used to generate electricity locally.

We also agree with Prof Simmie in his suggestion that now is not the time to be exposed to energy supply risks.

However, in suggesting that the "wrong option" was chosen, Prof Simmie appears to be unaware that plans were in place for just such a gas-turbine generating station at Bellacorrick, less than 20 kilometres from the Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy.

This would replace the recently closed peat-burning station, create high-quality local employment and greatly improve energy supply in the north west.
