Sir, - Mr Bruton's recent dismissal of republicanism as "gloomy and regressive" flies in the face of recent opinion polls. These show that most Britons believe that theirs will be a republic in less than 50 years.
Isn't it about time that British and Irish politicians moved out of the House of Mirrors and recognised that British and Irish nationalism are different sides of the same coin? I myself look forward to a time in the next century when Britain, as a republic, can play its full role as a European state and be at peace with all its neighbours. - Yours etc.,
