Madam, – In glorious weather, Blackrock emerged deserved Leinster Schools Senior Cup winners at rugby on Tuesday, beating a valiant Terenure side. What a pity the same could not be said of their past-pupil supporters in the stand?
Despite intervention by gardaí, supporters sang abusive songs and shouted obscenities at the opposition — especially when penalties were being taken. They were a disgrace to themselves, to their families and to their school.
When will they realise they must stop this unsportsmanlike behaviour and instead show the same high standards that characterised their team’s performance on the field? – Yours, etc,
Madam, – While driving near Ranelagh on Tuesday, I observed several groups of drunken Terenure College students, easily identified from their distinctive rugby shirts.
In one case they were standing in the middle of the road, causing a hazard to both themselves and to traffic.
It is a pity these, possibly underage, teenagers could not behave themselves with more decorum while wearing their school colours and supporting their team in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup Final. – Yours, etc,
