Madam, – The branding as unpatriotic by certain members of the Government of those availing of cheaper prices north of the Border is outrageous. It should be borne in mind that the gross mismanagement of the economy by Government, or more specifically, Fianna Fáil, is in no small part responsible for the straitened circumstances in which many people find themselves.

If the Government wishes to brand anybody unpatriotic, perhaps it should look to the tax exiles who, having enriched themselves hugely in this country, have no inclination whatsoever to give anything back. They were, of course, assisted in doing this by the same party. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Ibec has reported that cross-Border shopping will cost the exchequer almost €430 million in lost tax revenue, this year (Business Today, October 27th).

This does not surprise me having witnessed the number of Southern-registered cars in Newry last Sunday. In the off-licence part of Sainsbury’s you would think that prohibition was being introduced. Trolleys were being filled to the top with wine, spirits and beer. A chap with a Dublin accent who was in front of me at the checkout was buying 24 bottles of Paddy whiskey, eight bottles of vodka, several bottles of wine and a few cartons of beer.
