Sir, - You have printed letters from time to time on the extraordinary situation concerning Uggool beach, off Silver Strand in Co Mayo.
For those who may not be familiar with the story, this beautiful beach has been fenced off for some 10 years now, despite the legitimate protests of environmentalists, Keep Ireland Open, and members of the public who once enjoyed strolling across it.
A robust fence was erected all the way into the waterline, completely blocking access to the strand. For 10 years, interested parties have pleaded for a right of way. Mayo County Council and local TDs have been approached, but to no avail.
None of us campaigning for restoration of access to this public place wants to walk on private property, and there is no need for us to do so. But we do want to enjoy the beauty of Uggool beach, walk on it, admire it, swim off it - as we did quite rightfully and with freedom prior to 1989.
Why has this become such a puzzle and a seemingly insurmountable problem? - Yours, etc., Linda Cusack,
Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
