Sir, - I refer to your Statiscope No 107 on university funding for 1994-1995, which appeared on November 7th. The figures as quoted are accurate, but they give a less than full picture. "Other Income" is a technical term which, significantly, does not include income from research.
in the case of UCC, where research income is included for 1994-95, the figures are as follows:
Total income 59 million
State grant 47.7 per cent
Fee income 28.5 per cent
Research income
21.5 per cent (£12.7 million)
Other income 2.3 per cent
For the year 1995-96, with a total income of £66.3m and research income of £16.5m, the UCC figures are
State grant 45.4 per cent
Fee income 28.1 per cent
Research income
24.9 per cent
Other income 1.6 per cent
The State grant is significantly less than half the total income of the college.
Over a five year period, the total research income to UCC exceeds £60 million. This money directly supports 400 jobs on campus - a medium sized indigenous industry. - Yours, etc.,
President,
University College, Cork.
