Sir, - So they lowered their lenses. And they capped their pens.
Forever more the words "Dublin journalist" will be a euphemism for men and women who know how to practise their trade, who are quite good at it, who know what investigative journalism means but who choose - who freely choose - not to investigate, not to write, not to record and not to expose. Men and women who are complicit in great hypocrisies. Men and women who don't want to rock the boat. Men and women whose privileges of "access" are more important than the core values of their trade.
They knew, we did not, that fresh back from a weekend tryst in Paris with another man's wife, he attacked those who campaigned for divorce because they lacked regard for family values. And they lowered their lenses and they capped their pens.
It would seem, that, with one or two noble exceptions, that Dublin journalists are not to be relied upon for bold and honest reporting. It would seem that we are better off relying on the dogs in the street. - Yours, etc., John McGuiggan,
Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare.
