Sir, – The unsuitability of the Phoenix Park as a venue for the noisy debacle last weekend is just one more example of the human intent to destroy our environment. Here we have a beautiful natural parkland within the confines of the city, and beside it a collection of rare, exotic and in some cases endangered animals, living in captivity in Dublin Zoo, and which have no voice.
Living in Harold’s Cross, I am quite some distance from the Phoenix Park. Last Saturday, the atrocious repetitive din coming from the park’s environs and into my home was, to put it mildly, extremely intrusive, irritating and very stressful. Now I read that four nights of circling helicopters accompanied all this. The “music” and the nuisance started up again on Sunday, in fact, and continued throughout most of the day. I was forced to leave my home for a few hours in the afternoon, to get away from the noise. The unfortunate animals in the zoo, close beside it, had no means of escape from the noise.
May I suggest that forcing the animals to endure the stress of these noisy emissions is cruelty. I suggest that a more suitable venue be used in future. – Yours etc,
