Sir, - Although there are, indeed, extra Garda on the streets enforcing the various traffic rules/restrictions, Dublin traffic is moving more slowly, if at all, in certain areas. For instance, coming into Rathmines from Rathgar in the morning, and along the South Circular Road (leading onto Leonard's Corner) in the evening, when gardai stop motorists for driving (or getting into the left lane too early) in the bus lane, the car is stopped, usually with one or two other unlucky motorists pulling up behind, followed by the bus(es).
The ensuing routine of excuse, name, address, warning and/or summons only means that the buses coming along behind get fouled up in the mini traffic jam while the garda does his job and can't pull out into the traffic in the other lane. Eventually you have a line of buses, indicating and playing "chicken" with motorists in the other lane, going nowhere fast. At least, when the offending motorists are driving in the bus lanes the bus traffic is moving along too.
Now, even though the Gardai are catching all those offending motorists, traffic is getting worse and journey time is getting longer (for the bus commuters, at least). I would suggest that the Gardai work in pairs - I know, lack of resources, both human and financial and all that - but at least the other garda could direct traffic around the obstruction, and maybe ease the immediate problem until they create the next one. - Yours etc,
Kimmage Road West,
Dublin 12.
