Sir, - An easy and relatively cheap way of moving traffic more efficiently would be to change the sequence of traffic lights to turn amber again before green, as they do in the UK. That way, people would have their cars in gear, ready to move, instead of waiting for the lights to turn green before putting down their newspaper or book, or ceasing to rummage in their glove compartment, or whatever else people do while sitting in traffic. As a result, more cars would get through the lights.
Having lived in London for a number of years, I was aware of how efficiently cars moved in traffic, despite the volume, and this was one of the reasons. Let's lobby the Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal, Mr Bobby Molloy, who also deals with road safety and traffic. - Yours, etc.,
