Sir, - Surely the proliferation of traffic on the roads around nine in the morning and five in the evening could be alleviated greatly if employers permitted a proportion of their workforce to work an eight-to-four shift, instead of nine-to-five.
There is no logical reason why all office workers should work nine to five, just as there is no logical reason why all public houses should close at 11 p.m. Simple solutions are often overlooked in the increasingly complicated age in which we live, but the present congestion on our roads, with its concomitant increase in stress, road rage and sheer bad road manners, is rapidly becoming intolerable. - Yours, etc.,
Joe Patton,
Coolmine Woods, Dublin 15.
