Sir, – To John O’Loughlin’s “How appropriate” pejorative litany of Greek words (May 15th), I would add: alphabet, criticism, logic, analysis, synthesis, dialogue, politics, democracy. I might dismiss biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, history, geography as mere pedagogy, and vault over geometry, geology and tectonics to astronomy, philosophy, poetry, drama, music. Not to say comedy, and tragedy. What have the Greeks ever done for Europe? Apart from inventing it, that is. – Yours, etc,
