Sir, - Congratulations to Fr Pat Griffin (April 23rd) for highlighting the scandal of the widow who has to survive (like many others in today's boom economy) on a pension of £67.50 a week for everything, while a travelling TD is given as much for one night's B & B in Dublin. Fr Griffin suggests the treatment of this widow is "bordering on the immoral". Bordering?
Some of us think nothing of spending as much on a Saturday night out; others would use it for a weekend break - we need to get away, after all. It would probably pay for about two minutes of a top lawyer's time. Doesn't this worry anyone?
Politicians are paid to lead from the front. Are they happy to bear the ultimate responsibility for a society which is creating ever more wealth for the few at the expense of the poor, the old and the sick? - Yours, etc.,
M. R. Cruickshank
