Madam, - In his essay, written in an extraordinarily arrogant style, Mark Steyn (July 19th) claims that the war on terrorism can be won by destroying the jihad network in the West. However, denying alleged terrorists essential human rights, particularly the right of habeas corpus, and proposing to apply a rougher treatment to suspects holding the "wrong" (a Western) passport, is a very Jesuitical the-end-justifies-the-means-approach.

While it would most certainly not end the terror, it would definitely result in further injustice, racism and discrimination against fellow citizens of Arab origin. The Bush administration cannot expect to win the war on terrorism without moral superiority. As long as they and people like Mr Steyn fail to recognise this, it might not be a "bunch of losers" they have to deal with. - Yours etc.,
