Sir, - As the 19th century drew to a close, the editorial views of The Irish Times were staunchly unionist (with the UK) and generally anti-Catholic. They thus faithfully reflected the views of the ruling Anglo-Irish ascendancy.

One hundred years older, as the 20th century drew to a close, the editorial views of The Irish Times were still staunchly Unionist (with the EU) and generally anti-Catholic. They thus faithfully reflected the PC views of our ruling elite (i.e. the interlocking golden circles of business, finance, lawyers, and some politicians). As the French say: "plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose!"

It is reassuring to note that, in an era of rapid change, when so many are groping round in a featureless moral fog, there are still some unshifting certainties - for the times we live in! - Yours, etc.,
