Madam, – What joy! What bliss! I am so sick of reading about our current slick, venal scum, that Prof Dáibhí Ó Cróinín’s letter (August 28th) gave me such joy that I am almost delirious. Yes, we were great. We were scholarly. We established great schools and monasteries throughout Europe. We did this. We Irish.
We were not always defined by greed, corruption and oafish stupidity. Once we were a great and respected race. Let us remember this and banish the gombeen men from the Oireachtas. Henceforth, let us elect only people of integrity and intelligence. – Yours, etc,
