Sir, Having been in manufacturing most of my working life, I cannot but feel dismay when I hear of another factory closing down, for whatever reason. But when I hear of a factory which has shown profits of £5m closing down, I cannot but help feeling, angry.
Continental AG is showing very little consideration for its workforce of 650, some of whom might never obtain another job. Why because by manufacturing in a cheaper country, the profit could be £6m. But Continental AG could be making a big mistake.
I don't know how much of its production at Semperit is sold in this country it still could require the goodwill of the Irish people. What it is making one way, it could very well be losing the other way. I sincerely hope so. Yours, etc., Costelloe, Co Galway.
