THE SCIENCE OF STEAM

DUNCAN J MARTIN,

DUNCAN J MARTIN,

Madam, - You've done it again - just four days after publishing Frank Turvey's letter (January 24th) setting you right on what was coming out of an incinerator's chimneys, and just two weeks after Fintan O'Toole (justifiably) berated Martin Cullen TD for his poor grasp of basic science. Yet the science that eludes you is far more basic.

Conor O'Clery wrote in your edition of January 28th that "\ protesters'. . .breath vaporised in the bitter cold". It did not. It did the exact opposite. It condensed. The invisible water vapour in their breath turned into a visible cloud of tiny drops of water - just like the flue gases from the incinerator you gratuitously denigrated the week before! Would you ever consider insisting on Leaving Cert science as one of the minimum qualifications for your sub-editors? - Yours, etc.,

DUNCAN J MARTIN,
