Sir, - Will John Waters ever grow up? He says that when "someone like myself timidly suggests that this presidential campaign is sexist, someone pipes up that isn't it strange we had nothing to say when the Presidency was dominated by men. The logic is clear: it's pay-back time for the patriarchal male. . ."
Clear as mud. Either he was wrong to say nothing of the exclusion of female candidates up to 1990, or he is wrong to carp now.
But, he says, this lack of female candidates had nothing to do with real sexism, which he associates with this campaign. It was because our power hierarchies were based on the world of work, which "virtually up until the beginning of the present decade . . . required a degree of physical strength, which is, in the main, a male attribute."
Tell that to the farmer's wife. - Yours, etc.,
