Sir, - I have just read a full-page article in the very prominent Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias about the racist behaviour of my countrymen. I left Ireland 35 years ago and have returned only for short holidays, so maybe my views on Ireland and the Irish were those of a romantic idealist. What a shock! I feel such disappointment and disgust.

The article begins thus: "Cead mile failte - this is what one can read in the colourful brochures of the Irish Tourist Board, cead mile failte - not for everyone, judging by the increase in racist crimes happening in Ireland today."

The Irish must have very short memories. It was only yesterday that our forefathers, fathers, sons and daughters had to flee the country in search of food. Is there any Irish family today who does not have a family member living abroad?

The Land of Saints and Scholars. What has happened to Catholicism, Christianity, love and humanity? Are the Irish no longer interested in learning? These people have so much to share. Like all human beings they need love, understanding and respect. Open your insular hearts and minds!

I am lucky to teach in an international school in Lisbon (owned by the Irish Dominican Sisters) where we have children of more than 40 different nationalities. These children are so fortunate to be able to experience this multiracial and multicultural environment. They are citizens of the world, and go into the world unprejudiced, enlightened and with open minds. Can no one see how our Irish children could benefit from this experience too?

Ireland, the world is looking at you and my shame is profound. - Yours, etc.,
