Sir, - How is it possible that Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan, our, best track runner and with a very impressive record over several, years, could have been allowed to be upset before her race by such a triviality as the clothes she chose to wear? They were in accordance with our National Olympic Committee and, I gather from the TV round table discussion, perfectly allowable by the rules of the International Olympic Committee.

I understand that she was informed shortly before the race, by an official, that she was in breach of the rules, and this official had this so called breach brought to his attention by, of all people, an unidentified person. Should this person not have been well checked out, identified, and should, it not have been proven definitely that he had a right to make this complaint, and whether the complaint would stand up in any decent society?

The mind boggles. If this had happened within the law courts, she would have been given considerable damages, as her career was set back till the next Olympics, when she might well be past her best performance.

I am outraged - as I'm sure thousands of her other fans must also feel Heartfelt sympathy to you, Sonia. - Yours, etc.,
