Sir, - Jennifer Sweeney, lamenting the award of the Nobel Prize to Mr Trimble (October 21st), asks: "Does anybody else share my disgruntlement or am I just a begrudger?"
She can rest assured that there must be many people in Ireland who share her dismay. The Nobel Prize was meant as a reward for outstanding work - and perhaps self-sacrifice - for peace, not as a financial inducement to people to work for peace in the future.
Irish people as "begrudgers" were largely invented by journalists. Those who genuinely want peace prizes to be awarded for provable merit probably make up most of the Irish population. - Yours, etc., Desmond Wilson,
