Sir, - I concur with the comments by Gareth Jones of the European Federation of Geologists (May 11th).
A properly designed and implemented geotechnical investigation, drawing on all the relevant geoscience disciplines of rock mechanics, hydrogeology, tunnelling technology etc. is essential for devising the appropriate solutions for the underground element of the Luas project. Such an investigation must be undertaken by suitably qualified professional geologists and geotechnical engineers.
Although the seminal Shannon/ Ardnacrusha hydro-electric scheme was implemented long before my time in the 1920s, I am advised that there was considerable scepticism as to Ireland's ability to complete such a project at that time. We should not adopt any such fainthearted approach to Luas. Unlike in the 1920s, this country now has a wealth of geological and engineering expertise well capable of dealing with all aspects of Luas. - Yours, etc., Sean Finlay,
Chairman, Extractive Industries Division, Institution of Engineers of Ireland, Clyde Road, Dublin 4.
