Sir, - John Glasson began a campaign in 1834 to have a new carriage act introduced to improve Dublin traffic. Lord Morpeth assured him in 1836 that he would not fail to give every attention to Glasson's suggestions. In 1848 with the words "there are now four railway terminuses in Dublin and the want of a cheap, frequent and continuous mode of conveyance is strongly felt", Glasson petitioned Sir William Somerville for a new act to enable omnibuses to ply the city.
Morpeth, Somerville, O'Rourke. Will the Luas be ready for the centenary in 2034 or 2048 or will the plans join Glasson's letters in the National Archives as evidence of the failure of generations of politicians to act on the scandal of Dublin traffic? - Yours, etc., Tim O' Neill,
Dundrum, Dublin 14.
