Sir, - It is with interest and a little annoyance that I read of the Government's desire to improve Dublin City's traffic chaos through LUAS, quality bus corridors, cycle lanes etc. The fact of the matter is that through their current taxation policies this Government is forcing cars onto Dublin's streets.
Like many others working in a sales environment in Dublin City, I drive a company car. There are many opportunities, nevertheless, to make sales calls using Dublin's existing public transport systems. However, in order to reduce the draconian amount of benefit-in-kind taxation which I must pay on my car, I am left with no option but to continually drive my car around the city to help build up mileage and so reduce my personal tax bill.
I, like other people working in sales in this city, am being forced by this Government to sacrifice these opportunities to use public transport and thereby to help in my own way to reduce Dublin's chaotic traffic congestion and rising pollution. A change would be welcome. - Yours, etc., John Ryan
