Sir, - Pol O Muiri (An Irishman's Diary, August 10th) complains of a five-hour journey by Lough Swilly Bus Company from Burtonport to Letterkenny. What a pity he was in such a hurry. That journey transverses some of the most beautiful scenery in Donegal.
Take the Lough Swilly bus from Malin Head to Burtonport and I doubt if it could be done in a day. Many connections must be made along the way. No reflection on LS, but life moves in a more sedate way than in most parts of Ireland: it is not unknown for a bus driver to park the bus and carry the shopping to the home of an elderly passenger. To date nobody has heard a complaint from fellow passengers.
After 25 years in Dublin and 27 years in Donegal, I now, thankfully, realise that Donegal is a state of mind. Long may it continue. - Yours, etc.,
Colin McGlynn, Carnamoyle, Muff, Co Donegal.
