A chara, - Now that the UNIFIL parade has passed, with deserved praise given to all members of the Defence Forces who served with UNIFIL, may I express a little bit of disappointment that an unfortunate omission was made in your edition of November 24th by the failure to refer - even if only in passing - to the fact that the Defence Forces were also involved in a UN mission in the Lebanon in 1958?
An important historic feature of that duty, apart from it being in Lebanon, is that of being the first ever military commitment on behalf of Ireland to serve under the UN flag. Granted, UNOGIL - the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon - was a different type of mission to UNIFIL. That is not my point, as I am sure you will readily recognise. - Is mise,
