Madam, - The recent correspondence regarding the biblical line "how terrible is this place" when applied to churches reminds me of the quotation often used to illustrate the changing English language.
Westminster Abbey was described by a monarch (Henry VIII, I think) as "awful, terrible and artificial". He meant, of course, awe-inspiring, astounding and artistic, but somehow the modern terms seem flat in comparison. - Yours, etc.,
