Madam, - As many ATMs issue only €50 notes, I am often short of small-denomination notes to give my children for school lunches, bus fares, and so on. The other day I decided to change 12 €50 notes into €5 and €10 notes at my local bank.
Oddly, I was questioned, by two tellers, about why I wanted to change the notes. I explained - and then was told there would be a charge of 96 cent per €100 (almost €6) for this "transaction". But the nice man said he would "let me off" the charge, just this once.
I am so grateful.
