THE 'JOYS' OF LAP DANCING

Madam, - I agree wholeheartedly with the fulminating Mr Myers' sentiments about the lack of enforcement of many of our laws (Irishman's Diary, April 3rd) but I beg to disagree with him about what he calls the "morality police" of the gardai prosecuting lap dancing clubs.

I applaud An Garda Siochána for exposing these clubs for just what they are. Kevin may like to imagine that it's all clean, harmless fun between consenting adults - but is it?

How would Kevin Myers feel if the only way he could earn a reasonable amount of money was to sell his good-looking body to complete strangers to ogle and fondle night after night; to have pressure put on him to consent to more "services" elsewhere, to be offered drugs to help kill the pain of what he's expected to do to keep body and soul together, and then to find little way out of the game because of the debts he may have got into with criminal gangs in his own country in order to get to Ireland.

Is it any surprise that many of the women who find themselves working there are from poorer countries who find in lap dancing a way to make money quickly, they hope, in place of poverty in their own countries.

Wake up Kevin! You don't really think that lap dancing, "massage" and other elements of prostitution are what any woman would really want to do, if she had a truly free choice. - Yours, etc.,
