Sir, - Regarding Frank McDonald's report on August 13th ("Mr Ahern promises to save historic buildings"), may I welcome the comments of Mr Bertie Ahern, the Leader of Fianna Fail, on the need to save the interiors of historic buildings, and his courageous warning about the danger which many of our Georgian buildings now face through, redesign.
I would like to say that No 15 on Usher's Island, the house where James Joyce's famous short story The Dead takes place, is not beyond saving. Would it be too much to ask that the city fathers of Dublin, or the Board of Works, would buy it or, if need be, serve a compulsory purchase order on it? - Yours, etc.,
Terenure Road West,
Dublin 6W.
PS. We have already lost half of Eccles Street again, a street so important in literature.
