Sir, - I am writing in response to D.K. Henderson's letter of March 3rd. Undoubtedly there are foolish women drivers who use the rear-view mirror to cheek their makeup, just as there are foolish men drivers who use it as a shaving mirror - neither sex has the monopoly on stupidity. However, I would suggest that there is probably no safer driver than a mother with her own child on board.
That women generally - and not just mothers - are safer drivers than men is an indisputable fact, borne out by the fact that actuaries decree that we should be charged less for our motor insurance. Women cause, and are involved in, fewer accidents than men and those that we are involved in result in less damage to ears, fewer injuries to people and less loss of life.
As a regular reader of your paper I have read many cogent and witty letters from Mr. Henderson, but I'm afraid that, on this occasion, he has simply scored an own goal for the misogynists. - Yours, etc,
