Sir, - Frank McDonald is right when he says (Irish Times, July 23rd) that light rail can be part of a balanced investment in public and private transport, but is highly simplistic in his assumption that the current LUAS proposal is the appropriate solution.
There are serious questions to be asked of these proposals and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has a duty both to Dublin and its businesses to be vigilant in the pursuit of these answers. We are dealing with a multi-million project which will have a significant effect on the city, both in the short and long term. Therefore we must get it right.
It is highly disingenuous to label those who are asking these questions as the bad guys (the "car lobby"), cast against the good guys (Frank McDonald and the LUAS team). Mrs Mary O'Rourke has done the right thing in also asking these questions, and is to be commended for seeking an independent study into the city-centre underground option. - Yours, etc.,
Noel Carroll, Chief Executive, Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
